About Patrick Gilligan, M.D.
Patrick Gilligan, M.D. is a Native New Mexican Orthopaedic surgeon, born and raised in Santa Fe. Dr. Gilligan completed his undergraduate studies with honors at Santa Clara University where he received his Bachelor of Science. He completed medical school at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine. He went on to complete his Orthopedic Surgery residency at UNM, Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation as well. During his last year of residency, he was awarded Orthopedic Resident Instructor of the Year, 2019. He then finished his fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at West Virginia University School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics. Dr. Gilligan is skilled in performing muscle sparing direct anterior hip replacement for appropriate patients. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

I am over 60 yrs of age and have been an RN for 37 years, and currently employed full time. For the last 2 years of my full time work, I was hobbling in pain from my deteriorated right hip. After researching the anterior hip replacement procedure, I was referred to Dr. Patrick Gilligan, an outstanding orthopedic surgeon with the Lovelace Medical Group. Dr. Gilligan's surgical skill has provided me with a new "pep in my step", without any hitches - quite literally! I will be forever grateful to him and his amazing staff- PA Melissa Alfaro - Trombley, RN Carrie, HT Erica, and the friendly front desk staff - who took care of me "every step of the way"! My pain post - op was very, very minimal ( less than my pre - surgery hip ) , and I was literally up and walking with a walker, after day surgery, within hours - of course with PT assist. A fun fact: in 1991-1992, I had worked on the former St. Joseph's ( now known as Lovelace Downtown hospital) Orthopedics floor, caring for patients after their various orthopedic surgeries. I will be back on my feet soon to work full time as an RN, minus the painful hobbling, and better able to care for my patients. Personally, I am very excited to just be able to stand and walk with a straight posture, "normally" . I would definitely NOT hesitate to go through this surgery again if needed... which may be necessary in the future with my other hip. From the bottom of my heart, I will be forever grateful to Dr.Gilligan, and PA Melissa Alfaro - Trombley, and their excellent support staff for giving me a renewed lease on my hip, and the wonderful outcome of my total hip replacement, for a beautiful quality of life I can now move forward with, in solid confidence!

Dr Gilligan, his associates and his support staff are amazing. When it comes to making certain that his patients are informed they are tops. Dr Gilligan exudes a level of confidence in his abilites that made me feel safe in his care. His support staff called several times during recovery process and always let me know who I would be talking with if I needed to call them and would verify that I had the correct number. They made me feel as if there was no question I couldn't ask them. The pre-op and post-op instructions were detailed and anticipated the questions that I think most people would ask. They were an indispensable guide during the months before and after surgery. I would highly recommend Dr Gilligan and his staff to anyone who would want care from a friendly and professional medical team.
