David Hoang, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. David Hoang, M.D., F.A.C.S., is a highly skilled and experienced general surgeon, renowned for his exceptional care and commitment to advancing surgical practices. Board-certified in both surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Hoang specializes in a broad range of surgical procedures, with particular expertise in gallbladder and pancreatic diseases, gastrointestinal cancers, foregut disease, recurrent hernias, and other complex conditions. He is one of the first surgeons in New Mexico to utilize the cutting-edge da Vinci dv5 Surgical System, making him a pioneer in robotic surgery in the state.

Dr. Hoang is deeply committed to patient-centered care. He takes the time to build strong relationships with his patients, ensuring they are well-informed about every aspect of their surgical journey. His practice is dedicated to treating individuals with significant health challenges, including multiple intra-abdominal surgeries, chronic wounds, massive hernias, enterocutaneous fistulas, and unwanted ostomies. His ultimate goal is to ensure that all individuals in New Mexico have access to the highest-quality surgical care. Recognizing the importance of access to specialized care, he founded the Lovelace Medical Group Heartburn Clinic to address esophageal and stomach diseases and prevent serious complications for patients across New Mexico.

Education and Training

Dr. Hoang graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Houston. He was a research fellow at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he focused on community health and volunteered extensively to improve healthcare access for underserved populations. His residency in General Surgery at the University of New Mexico provided comprehensive training across surgical disciplines, and he completed a clinical fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a leading institution in advanced surgical care.

Professional Leadership and Contributions

Dr. Hoang has held several key positions within Lovelace Health System, including Lead Physician for Surgery, Medical Director of Emergency General Surgery, and member of the Peer Review, Ethics, Physician Advisory Council, and Medical Executive Committees. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association. He was a valued member of the State of New Mexico Medical Advisory Team.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hoang has performed thousands of successful operations, showcasing his exceptional surgical skill. He has actively contributed to the future of general surgery by training residents and attending physicians, sharing his expertise in advanced robotic surgery and other innovative techniques to improve patient outcomes and reduce recovery times.

Dr. Hoang is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the American Medical Association, Americas Hernia Society, and the American Foregut Society.

Beyond his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Hoang is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in Bernalillo County and volunteers with New Mexico Kids Matter, advocating for children in foster care. Dr. Hoang’s personal interests include fly fishing, wilderness travel, basketball, soccer, pickleball, snowboarding, and other sports. His love for teaching extends to mentoring kids in various capacities, including outdoor activities and fly fishing. His passion for foresight has led him to pursue a professional certificate in foresight, and he is a member of the Association of Professional Futurists. This interest reflects his forward-thinking approach to both his personal and professional life, as he seeks innovative ways to improve healthcare and anticipate the evolving needs of patients and communities.
