Meal Prep 101

Becoming a #Foodie can help you meet your #HealthyWeight goals. We are getting smarter and about our food choices and there are many great resources for health-minded families. However, it can be hard to make healthy meals when we are busy. Spending a couple of hours at the beginning of the week to plan, buy, clean, prepare and portion out meals can not only reduce the temptation to mindlessly snack, but it can also help you save money since you won’t have to buy food on the go.

Lovelace, UNM Medical Group celebrate opening of new rehab hospital with ribbon cutting ceremony

Earlier this summer, Lovelace Health Systems and UNM Medical Group celebrated the opening of the new Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital with a ribbon cutting ceremony. This facility offers cutting-edge technologies and brings more comprehensive rehabilitation services to patients. ““I think with the academic mission of the university along with the great care that we do here at the rehab hospital, we’ll be able to make our programs more efficient and more cost effective,” said Derrick Jones, CEO of the Lovelace-UNM Rehab Hospital.

Ready to start eating healthy and not sure where to start?

The key is to consume the right amount of calories from the right kinds of foods to support your activity level. Activity levels determine how many calories a day you can eat without gaining weight. If you are not moving much or expending much energy, you will want to decrease your calories to prevent those pounds from creeping up.

Some tips for healthy food choices include:

·       Focus on adding healthy foods, rather than just taking away unhealthy foods.

What is survivorship care?

After cancer patients go through their treatment, what happens next for them? This is the time when survivorship care is important. “Survivorship care deals with any consequences of the after effects of surgery, radiation and general chemotherapy,” shares Lovelace Breast Care Center provider, Dr. Katherine Lee.

Skin Care Tips During Pregnancy

As your baby and belly grow you will notice some changes in your skin as well. Here are some tips to protect your skin as your body adjusts to pregnancy:

·       Limit your weight gain to only what your OB provider or midwife recommends. This will limit the amount of stretching your skin will experience during pregnancy.

·       Cocoa butter can help diminish the appearance of stretch marks and help fade skin imperfections.

Click Clack – Front and Back (Car Seat Safety Tips)

According to I’m Safe, motor vehicle crashes take the lives of more than 12 children every week in the US. In 1985, New Mexico held the highest fatality rate in the United States. After many safety initiatives and policies, New Mexico now ranks 13th in traffic fatalities.

Tips for Postpartum Partners

When the unexpected happens and a new parent is living with depression, the situation can be frustrating. Pregnancy, mood and anxiety disorders can affect the whole family. There is no magic wand to cure depression and recovery may feel slow, but with a plan and dedication to health care, support and communication, it does get better over time. No matter how hard you try, or how much you love your partner, recovery takes longer than you want. You have to wait this out with each other.

As you support your partner, it is important that you also take care of yourself:

Marijuana during pregnancy

Many people think that cannabinoids, like marijuana, are harmless during pregnancy, but research suggests otherwise.

·       “Cannabinoid” is a term to describe a group of 66 ingredients found in the flowering cannabis plant.

·       Each of these 66 chemicals affects brain receptors differently.

·       A main ingredient in marijuana is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

Patient- and Family-Centered Care at Lovelace Westside Hospital changes how patients are seen

At Lovelace Westside Hospital we value the relationships we establish with our patients and their families. Our recent Patient Family Centered Care (PFCC) designation supports a style of care where the needs and choices of patients and their families define the care they receive.

Daddy Depression: New Fathers with Paternal Postnatal Depression

Dads can have trouble adjusting to parenthood just like mom. Feeling anxious and stressed can come with being a new dad. Sadness, or blues, may occur as a result of a specific situation or event. “Daddy Blues” can improve with restful sleep, lunch with a friend, going to the gym or playing a sport. Feeling sad, or blue can be a normal part of becoming a parent for some men.

Mental Health Awareness Month – Why do we care?

Addiction, depression and anxiety are examples of mental health conditions. One in five Americans are affected during their lifetime, which means every American is impacted either directly, or through their friends and family. Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition.

Albuquerque mother receives heart transplant after delivery

I started what I like to call my “long term relationship” with Lovelace on November 10, 2013. I delivered a beautiful baby girl named Kassidy at Lovelace Women’s Hospital. The amount of support that my husband and I received from the nurses and the entire delivery and post-partum staff was so encouraging and gave me the confidence that I needed. I am forever grateful for the kind words and positive experience from Lovelace Woman’s Hospital.

Prenatal Yoga and Childbirth

Women who have never used yoga for fitness can still use yoga to prepare for childbirth. Physical movements and postures can create flexibility and strength for mom as her baby and body begins to grow and change. Breathing techniques from yoga were the inspiration for Dr. Lamaze and the creation of his natural childbirth process. Another part of yoga, beyond the physical, has to do with being focused, present and mindful. These three aspects combine to increase mom's comfort during pregnancy, labor and even breastfeeding.

Project You: Making Space for Mom

Have you ever felt like the world is waiting for results at all hours of the day and every day of the week? Well, I have. The fast-paced world that we live in can sometimes take over our time and attention. It is so easy, as a mother or parent, to get tangled up in the web of demands. The old adage “if momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy” is actually true. If we forget to take time for ourselves, we won’t be able to perform at the peak of our abilities when our kids need us most. If you feel like the world is weighing on your shoulders:

Lovelace leadership series – time is at the heart of the work

Maria Atencio, RN, is working against the clock. When she joined Lovelace in 1999 in the emergency department at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico at Lovelace Medical Center, she understood the urgency to assess and prepare heart attack patients for intervention as quickly as possible. Every minute mattered. As emergency department charge nurse, Maria coordinated the care for a larger number of heart patients, always mindful and aware of time. In the heart catheterization lab, she worked side-by-side with physicians witnessing the moments lives were saved. It was always a race against time.

Self-Care

Your life has been filled with appointments and events surrounding the arrival of your newest family member. Remember that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your little one. When you are well, your care of others (baby, partner) improves too. It is not a selfish obsession to care for you. It is necessary for you in order to be healthy mentally, emotionally and physically. Self care allows you to be fully present for all the sweetness life has to offer.
