About neurosurgery
Neurosurgeons and neurologists share many of the same patients and often work together for the optimal care of the person. Many conditions are treated by either specialist, with some conditions being best managed without surgery and others with operations. If medical intervention fails or is not acceptable, the neurologist may request the assistance of a neurosurgeon to evaluate the potential for a surgical treatment.
Many problems are structural in nature and may therefore respond best to neurosurgical intervention. It is much like the cardiologist who manages heart disease with medical intervention and the cardiac surgeon who offers surgery for those who have failed to recover with medication. Frequently, patients are sent to a neurologist by their primary care physician and, based upon the problem, referred to a neurosurgeon for their surgical expertise.
Our all-encompassing neurological clinic helps patients address issues from headaches to spinal and cranial surgeries. We commonly treat the following conditions:
- Brain disorders like Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, or congenital malformations
- Facial pain conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, and various facial pain syndromes
- Infections involving the brain, spinal cord, fluid surrounding these structures, or spinal vertebrae and discs
- Neurovascular disorders, encompassing strokes, brain hemorrhages, aneurysms, vascular malformations, and blood clots affecting the brain or spinal cord
- Peripheral nerve injuries or compression, leading to pain, numbness, weakness, and muscle wasting in various body parts
- Spinal problems causing neck or back pain, nerve pinching, and associated pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs
- Traumatic injuries to the brain, spinal cord, bones of the spine, nerves, and skull
- Tumors involving the brain, spinal cord, nerves, skull, or spine, including meningiomas, acoustic schwannomas, and pituitary tumors
If you or a loved one has had a stroke, our neurosurgery team will work closely with the inpatient stroke team to provide surgical care if necessary. To learn more about our neurosurgery services, please call 505-727-2727.
