Over-sanitizing during cold and flu season

Are we getting too stressed over germs? Will it actually help our children if we expose them to germs? What is the hygiene hypothesis? Earlier, we shared material on how to keep children safe from cold and flu germs, but there is another train of thought on the topic. Some experts and parents say that early exposure can contribute a stronger immune system. Which path should parents take? The answer is both.

Lovelace Medical Group’s Dr. Jeffrey Thomas agrees that there are plenty of dangerous germs out there and we should take precautions, but says there needs to be a balance.

Hygiene Hypothesis states that children who have less exposure to infectious agents at an early age may have suppressed immune systems that are more susceptible to allergens and germs as adults. There are several studies that allude to adults having less asthma if they had two or more pets and were exposed to dander during formative years.

A common misunderstanding is that you need to keep kids inside all winter. However, it is a good idea to let them out to play unless the weather is just entirely unfavorable. It is healthy for them to move and run and breathe some air that hasn’t been recycled through the house many times over. Germs reproduce in warm places, so getting outside with proper gear will not necessarily get children sick.

It is possible to over-sanitize, especially for young children. Hand washing with gentle soap and water is appropriate, but the soaps do not need to be antibacterial every time for children to remain safe. In fact, if over-used, it can interfere with developing a strong immune system. Adults, on the other hand, can and should use antibacterial soaps and scrubs.

Follow basic flu and cold prevention methods and carry on with your life. Try not to be so worried about germ exposure that children are not allowed to move or play. Their immune systems are adapting to their surroundings and germs will be there. Most germs have been with us for hundreds of years and they aren’t going away. Find the balance that works for your family. Remember to eat well, rest well and that spring is just around the corner.
