Healthy Lifestyle Choices to Lower Your Breast Cancer Risk

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a good time to think about steps you can take to protect your health. While not all risk factors can be controlled, healthy habits can lower your chance of developing certain cancers and other health problems. Small changes can make a big difference.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being at a healthy weight lowers your risk for many health problems, including some cancers. Talk with your provider about what a healthy weight looks like for you. Even losing a few pounds can help if you are above your ideal range. If you need extra support, your care team can help you create a safe and realistic plan.

Choose Healthy Foods

Fuel your body with more fruits, vegetables and whole grains such as brown rice or 100% whole-wheat bread. Try to limit red meat like beef, pork and lamb, and avoid processed meats such as bacon, sausage or deli meats. Cut back on sugary drinks, including soda, sports drinks and fruit drinks.

Limit Alcohol

The healthiest choice is to avoid alcohol altogether. If you do drink, limit it to no more than one drink a day. A single drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of liquor.

Stay Active

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, such as walking, gardening or playing with your kids or pets. If you can, add 75 minutes of more vigorous activity, like jogging, swimming or jumping rope. If you’re new to exercise, start small and gradually increase your time.

Sit Less

Too much sitting can affect your health. Reduce screen time when possible, including TV, social media or video games, and take breaks to move around if you sit for long periods at work.

Take Charge of Your Health

Healthy habits are an important step in lowering your cancer risk, but screenings are just as critical. Mammograms can detect breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable.
