Lovelace Medical Center recognized for high-quality heart attack care in New Mexico

The American Heart Association awards showcase LMC’s implementation and commitment to quality treatment, care coordination for heart attack patients

ALBUQUERQUE – July 15, 2024 – Lovelace Medical Center (LMC) has earned two prestigious awards from the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® program, recognizing the hospital’s excellence in treating heart attack patients:

  • STEMI Receiving GOLD PLUS with Target: Type 2 Diabetes
  • NSTEMI GOLD with Target: Type 2 Diabetes

These honors reflect LMC’s commitment to delivering fast, evidence-based treatment to patients experiencing two major types of heart attacks:

  • STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction): A severe and time-sensitive heart attack caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery.
  • NSTEMI (Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction): A less immediately dangerous, but still serious, heart attack often involving a partial or complete blockage.

“Effective, timely care is crucial for anyone experiencing a heart attack,” said Brian Miller, CEO of Lovelace Medical Center. “The program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, so patients have the best possible chance of survival and quality of life following a serious heart attack.”

According to the American Heart Association, more than 1 million cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) require hospitalization in the U.S. each year, and about 30% of ACS cases are classified as STEMI, caused by a complete blockage in a coronary artery about 70% of ACS cases are classified as NSTEMI, caused by a complete blockage in a coronary artery. Like all heart attacks, this requires timely treatment to restore blood flow as quickly as possible.
