Menopause is a natural phase of life—but for many women, it doesn’t feel that way. Symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disruptions and mood changes can make the transition confusing and overwhelming.
The good news? You don’t have to navigate it alone.
“Menopause marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years,” says Sarah Whittington, DNP and certified nurse midwife at Lovelace Regional Hospital. “It’s a normal process, caused by a gradual decline in estrogen and progesterone.”
What to expect
Most women experience menopause between ages 40 and 55, though it happens in stages:
- Perimenopause: Periods become irregular; hot flashes and sleep issues may begin.
- Menopause: Diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.
- Post-menopause: Follows menopause; some symptoms may persist or change.
No two experiences are exactly alike. Some women experience minimal symptoms, while others face more challenges. Common symptoms include:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort
- Mood swings and irritability
- Sleep disturbances
- Fatigue, joint pain, and changes in skin, hair or libido
“Every woman’s experience is different,” says Katrina Dowdy, CNM, also a midwife at Lovelace Regional Hospital. “What matters is knowing what’s typical and when it’s time to ask for help.”
Caring for yourself and your health
Early or premature menopause, before age 45, can increase the risk of health issues like heart disease, osteoporosis, and memory problems. “If you’re experiencing early symptoms, talk to your provider. Early evaluation can make a big difference,” Whittington says.
While menopause is a natural part of aging, that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it. The team at Lovelace Medical Group offers a range of evidence-based options, including:
- Hormone therapy
- Lifestyle and nutrition support
- Counseling for sexual health or fertility concerns
“Our goal is to create a personalized care plan that meets each woman’s unique needs,” Dowdy says. “We want our patients to feel empowered, informed, and supported—every step of the way.”
