For every 100,000 people living in New Mexico in 2016, 1,466 years of life were lost to heart disease (ABC News). According to Global Burden of Cardiovascular Disease Collaboration and the American Medical Association, New Mexicans are more likely to be affected by heart disease than almost anywhere else in the country.
The good news is there is a decline in the number of people with heart disease across the United States. These heart health trends are motivation that we need to start examining our heart health. Heart health begins at home with starting a heart-healthy diet and exercise.
