Lovelace Health System, UNM Medical Group, Inc., and UNM School of Medicine Announce New Partnership

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ALBUQUERQUE, JANUARY 11, 2017 — Lovelace Health System and UNM Medical Group, Inc., are partnering to deliver enhanced state-of-the-art rehabilitation services to New Mexico patients recovering from health care conditions such as stroke, brain injury and musculoskeletal disorders.

Under a new agreement, Lovelace and UNM physicians and providers will deliver services at Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital and its outpatient therapy clinics starting in 2017. As part of this agreement, the hospital will be renamed Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital. As a part of this transaction, the UNM School of Medicine and Lovelace also plan to launch a new residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation there.

“We are partnering with UNM Medical Group and the University to serve a growing need in the community for specialized rehabilitation services,” said Derrick Jones, CEO of Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital. “This partnership allows us to continue to provide quality rehabilitation services while increasing access to these services and an opportunity to advance services through UNM’s academic and educational expertise.”

“We are pleased to be partnering with Lovelace to provide expanded rehabilitation services, which can bring a higher level of rehabilitation learning and growth to New Mexicans,” said Paul B. Roth, MD, MS, UNM’s Chancellor for Health Sciences. “The Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital and its clinics deliver a high level of quality patient care. We are proud to join with them to support our academic mission and align our clinical resources.”

Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital is a modern, 62-bed facility that provides inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation tailored to each patient’s unique needs. It is the only New Mexico hospital that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities in six programs.

In addition to Lovelace Rehabilitation Hospital, Lovelace operates five outpatient rehabilitation clinics in Albuquerque and Santa Fe that will also be part of this partnership with UNM Medical Group, a multi-specialty group practice that serves as the faculty practice of the UNM School of Medicine. This partnership does not include the outpatient rehabilitation clinics at Lovelace Women’s Hospital, Lovelace Westside Hospital or current UNM Rehabilitation facilities.

Under the operating and management agreements, Lovelace Health System will continue to manage day-to-day operations of both Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital and its outpatient clinics. Jones will continue as CEO and John Henry Sloan, MD, will continue as chief medical officer. All of the hospital’s leadership team and employees will also remain. UNM will appoint a chief academic officer to join the hospital leadership team. The hospital will be governed by a new six-member board. Three of its members will be appointed by Lovelace and three by UNM.

This rehabilitation hospital partnership, a first for UNM, allows greater continuity of care for UNM Health System patients who need rehabilitation services. It will also enable the UNM School of Medicine to develop New Mexico’s first Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program at Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital. This will help fill a growing demand for more rehabilitation providers in New Mexico, and allow for improved patient access to rehabilitation services and lead to advancements in rehabilitation treatments and technology.
